Magnetic Wand

Repair a broken magnetic wand with an adjustable 3D printed rigid core and TPU-wrapped magnetic pickup handle.

This customizable magnetic wand repair lets you reuse an existing magnet and rebuild the handle with a rigid printed core wrapped in flexible TPU. Adjust the magnet size, handle dimensions, and TPU outer shell to create a grippy magnetic pickup wand for screws, pins, small hardware, craft supplies, shop cleanup, or supervised classroom-style use.

The internal core can be printed in PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, or another rigid filament, while the TPU outer body helps capture the magnet and adds a softer, more durable exterior. Inspect the finished print carefully before use, especially if it will be handled by children.

Assembly Instructions

Materials Needed:
1x Magnet

Instructions:

  1. Carefully extract the magnet from the broken wand or pickup tool, or use purchased magnet. 
  2. Measure the magnet diameter and length in millimeters.
  3. Enter the magnet measurements and handle size. Add a little clearance if your printer runs tight.
  4. Optional: Generate a cut-down test version of the handle loop to confirm the size and grip feel before printing the full part.
  5. Print the internal core in PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, or another rigid filament.
  6. Make sure the magnet seats fully inside the printed core.
  7. Begin printing the flexible outer body in TPU.
  8. At the pause point, place the magnet and rigid core into the TPU print.
  9. Continue printing so the TPU fully captures the internal assembly.
  10. Confirm the magnet is fully enclosed with no gaps, cracks, or exposed edges.
